Prevent Attacks By Managing Stress

Migraines can result from the body’s reaction to stress or other emotional states, such as anxiety, depression, emotional conflicts, fatigue or repressed hostility.

While it is impossible to avoid stress, people can learn how to handle it through relaxation techniques. The best thing is to find out what kind of stress triggers your migraine and avoid these situations wherever possible.

Biofeedback training is a technique that can be utilized in managing headache (both migraine and tension-type). It is one technique where you become integrally involved in your own headache treatment. One must be amenable to this type of therapy and willing to practice and make a commitment.

Relaxation techniques, through warming of the hands and muscle relaxation, are practiced with the aid of instruments measuring temperature or muscle tension. With repeated exercise, one gradually learns physiological sensations or body cues that eventually allow the elimination of measuring instruments.

Biofeedback can be used at any time or any place when needed. It can be utilized alone or in combination with medication to prevent attacks or stop attacks once started.

Guided imagery has also been found helpful in inducing a state of relaxation. Imagining a scene that gives you a sense of well-being and warmth, such as a sunny beach, can bring about relaxation, especially if you take deep, slow breaths.
